Psychological stress generates inflammation and oxidative stress in various tissues. Visceral fat as the target site of inflammation is then correlated with stress-induced obesity. Redox imbalance following inflammation also has prominent impacts on hepatic tissue. Therefore, the development of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties from plant bioactive compounds is necessary to be investigated. Anthocyanin (ANC) from various plants is previously described as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant even though its effect in psychological stress remains underexplored. Purple sweet potatoes (PSP) has ANC as its natural pigment. Previous studies revealed the potential effect of ANC from PSP on behavior and an antidepressant candidate. Thus, this study was purposed to determine the effect of ANC from PSP on inflammation and oxidative stress in visceral fat and hepatic tissue respectively. A total of 25 adult male BALB/c mice were assigned into groups of control, stress, stress+ANC 10 mg/kgBW, stress+ANC 20 mg/kgBW and stress+ANC 40 mg/kgBW. Restraint stress was applied 2 hours/day for 14 days. Enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was conducted to measure level of IL-6 and IL-10 in visceral fat as well as SOD and MDA from hepatic tissue. The results demonstrated that the supplementation of ANC reduces the level of IL-6 cytokine (p=0.005), tends to increase IL-10 (p=0.612), reduces hepatic SOD (p=0.03), and does not significantly affect the level of hepatic MDA (p=0.432). Both ratios of IL-6/IL-10 and SOD/MDA were reduced following ANC administration. Total ANC extracts are suggested to have a potential role of resisting inflammation and oxidative stress in the psychologically stressed model. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the benefits of ANC from PSP in other peripheral organs under psychological stress exposure.

Extraordinary capabilities underlie the potential use of immune cells, particularly macrophages, in bone tissue engineering. Indeed, the depletion of macrophages during bone repair often culminates in disease scenarios. Inspired by the native dynamics between immune and skeletal systems, this work proposes a straightforward in vitro method to bioengineer biomimetic bone niches using biological waste. For that, liquefied and semipermeable reservoirs generated by electrohydrodynamic atomization and layer‐by‐layer techniques are developed to coculture umbilical cord‐derived human cells, namely monocyte‐derived macrophages, mesenchymal‐derived stromal cells (MSCs), and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Poly(ε‐caprolactone) microparticles are also added to the liquefied core to act as cell carriers. The fabricated microcapsules grant the successful development of viable microtissues, ensuring the high diffusion of bioactive factors. Interestingly, macrophages within the bioengineered microcapsules increase the release of osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin, and vascular endothelial growth factor. The cytokines profile variation indicates macrophages' polarization into a prohealing phenotype. Altogether, the incorporation of macrophages within the fabricated microcapsules allows to recreate an appropriate bone microenvironment for developing new bone mineralized microtissues. The proposed bioencapsulation protocol is a powerful self‐regulated system, which might find great applicability in bone tissue engineering based on bottom‐up approaches or disease modeling.

Transmission of infections during pregnancy is known to alter the development and functioning of the fetus immune system, resulting in an inadequate immune response to common childhood infections and immunizations. Although it is a developing and actively researched topic, maternal parasitic infections remain poorly understood. Millions of women of reproductive age are currently at risk of parasite infection, while many pregnant, chronically infected women are excluded from mass drug administration due in part to a lack of resources, as well as fear of unknown adverse fetal outcomes. infection, there is no clear mechanism for understanding how maternal infection reprograms offspring immunity. Purpose - to determine the currently studied mechanisms of the influence of parasitic infections transmitted during pregnancy on the immune system of the fetus and to describe the possible effects of these influence in the long term on the health of children. Conclusions. The study of maternal parasitic infections is a rapidly developing field. Although infant mortality rates are declining, areas with endemic parasites still have the highest infant mortality rates. As antiparasitic therapy is not always curable, there is a critical need to understand the effects of maternal infection on offspring immune development. Due to the increased risk of immune alteration due to maternal inflammation and reduced passive antibody transmission, maternal parasitic infections and their mechanism of adverse immunomodulation must be uncovered to improve vaccination regimens and reduce childhood morbidity in endemic regions.
