Interleukin-27 as a Novel Biomarker for Early Cardiopulmonary Failure in Enterovirus 71-Infected Children with Central Nervous System Involvement

Abstract: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a major pathogen for severe hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which leads to severe neurological complications and has high morbidity and mortality. Reliable biomarker for the prediction of deterioration in EV71-infected children with central nervous system (CNS) involvement may reduce the cardiopulmonary failure and mortality. Here, we found that serum IL-27 levels were significantly higher in stage III EV71-infected HFMD patients with early cardiopulmonary failure and strong corr… Show more

“…IL-27 is produced by the activation of antigenpresenting cells in the early stage, promoting the proliferation of naive T cells, and cooperating with IL-12 to stimulate the production of IFN-γ in T cells and promoting the early Th1 cells [47]. Our previous study [44] found that serum IL-27 levels were distinctly higher in clinical stage III (early cardiopulmonary failure) EV71-infected HFMD patients than in clinical stage II (involvement of the nervous system) or clinical stage IV (cardiopulmonary failure) EV71-infected patients, which suggested that IL-27 may play a role in HFMD caused by EV71 infection, especially in patients with early cardiopulmonary failure. 6.5.…”

“…Enterovirus, which causes HFMD, significantly increases the release of circulating inflammatory mediators (23). Interleukin (IL)-27 is associated with early cardiopulmonary failure in enterovirus-induced HFMD (24). Cytokines and chemokines play a role in the development of HFMD (25).…”

“…We adopted the diagnostic criteria for HFMD disease with EV71 infection set out in the Chinese guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of HFMD (2018 edition) ( 20 ). Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to conduct the stool test to determine if the participants were positive for the EV71 virus as previously reported ( 6 , 21 ). The demographic and clinical characteristics of all the study participants are set out in Table 1 .…”
