Interleukin-1β Gene (IL-1β) Polymorphisms (SNP –511 and SNP +3953) in Thyroid-Associated Ophthalmopathy (TAO) among the Polish Population

Abstract: No association between the IL-1beta polymorphisms and the TAO existed, so those polymorphisms are not suitable genetic markers for TAO.

“…Unfortunately, literature still lacks more studies investigating the role of this polymorphism in GD and GO. Some studies also suggest a correlation between polymorphisms in cytokines involved in orbit inflammation and GO, but not GD [51,52], reinforcing that even though these two conditions may be clinically associated, they might not share all the same molecular pathways.…”

“…Several genetic association studies provided suggestive evidence of linkage of GD to the polymorphisms of IL-1␣ and IL-1␤ genes. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) included in other studies, one located in the 5= flanking region at position Ϫ889 (rs1800587, T-889 C) in the IL-1␣, and the other in the 5= flanking region at position Ϫ511 (rs16944, A-511 G) in the IL-1␤ gene, have been found associated with the risk for GD and GO, but these results are still inconclusive [15][16][17][18].…”

“…In recent years, several studies have tried to correlate molecular markers for the IL -1 and IL -1 receptor genes with severity or outcome of disease. [ 5 18 19 20 21 22 23 ] ESRD could be considered to be a chronic systemic inflammatory state as about 30-50% of dialysis patient's show markedly activated inflammatory response. Inflammation is regulated in part by genes of the IL -1 gene cluster.…”
