Interim Scoring for the EQ-5D-5L: Mapping the EQ-5D-5L to EQ-5D-3L Value Sets

Abstract: The nonparametric model was preferred for its simplicity while performing similarly to the other models. Being independent of the value set that is used, it can be applied to transform any EQ-5D-3L value set into EQ-5D-5L index values. Strengths of this approach include compatibility with three-level value sets. A limitation of any crosswalk is that the range of index values is restricted to the range of the EQ-5D-3L value sets.

“…Each item has five response options ranging from no impairment to extreme impairment. An index score, where 0 is state equal to death and 1 is full health, was generated for all respondents using the interim U.K. scoring algorithm (Van Hout et al, 2012). …”

“…Health index scores range from -0.281 to 1, with negative values representing health states worse than death, 0 representing the 'dead' state, and 1 the 'full health' state. Until the publication of this value set, studies published in the UK, and elsewhere, on the EQ-5D-5L were relying on a crosswalk health index score calculated using a mapping algorithm to the UK general population tariff developed for the EQ-5D-3L based on the TTO method alone from a sample of 3,395 members [56,57]. In this value set, herein referred to as "EQ-5D-3L UK crosswalk", health index scores range from -0.594 to 1, with 26.7% of health states being considered worse than death.…”

“…However, a series of data cleaning procedures were performed to guarantee the quality (i.e. repetition of items to check consistency in responses throughout the survey) [14]. Second, as for possible lack of representativeness this should not be a problem in the current context, since studying the relationship between different instruments does not require a representative sample of the population.…”

“…We adopted the new EQ-5D-5L value set for England based on both timetrade-off (TTO) and discrete choice experiment (DCE) [13], which will be referred to as the new England tariff. In one descriptive analysis, the interim UK cross-walk tariff was also included [14,15].…”
