Interferon- -loaded collagen scaffolds reduce myofibroblast numbers in rat palatal mucosa

Abstract: Wound contraction and scar formation after cleft palate repair lead to growth impairment of the maxilla and midface. Myofibroblasts play a key role in these processes. The application of an interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-loaded collagen scaffold after surgery might reduce the differentiation of myofibroblasts. In this study, the tissue response to IFN-γ-loaded collagen scaffolds was evaluated after implantation in the palate of rats. Scaffolds, with or without IFN-γ, were implanted submucoperiosteally in the palate of t… Show more

“…Anterior open bite (AOB) and posterior crossbite have been identified as the most common occlusal abnormalities in primary dentition. 4 , 5 AOB is characterized by lack of occlusal contact in the anterior region, while the remaining teeth are in occlusion. 6 , 7 AOB is more prevalent in primary dentition, with a prevalence between 6.2% and 50.0% worldwide, varying according to the population group studied.…”

“… 6 , 7 AOB is more prevalent in primary dentition, with a prevalence between 6.2% and 50.0% worldwide, varying according to the population group studied. 3 , 4 , 5 , 8 - 11 This is most likely to be associated with an increase in overbite during the mixed dentition period, and the self-correcting nature of the majority of cases of anterior open bite in primary dentition. 5 , 12 …”

“…For example, acellular type 1 collagen-heparin scaffolds containing fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can stimulate angiogenesis, neovascularization and vascular tissue regeneration in vivo [29, 30]. To reduce wound contraction and scarring following cleft palate surgery, Jansen et al developed interferon- γ -loaded collagen scaffolds that significantly diminished myofibroblast influx/differentiation following palate surgery in Wistar rats [31]. …”
