Interferometric Measurements with Wideband Signal Processing Techniques

Abstract: Bathymetric sonar systems are widely used nowadays in seafloor mapping and exploration. The differential phase technique, also known as interferometry, is widely used in these bathymetry measurement sonars, but the assessment of measurement uncertainty and data density are not completely understood and explored. This research paper concerns the description of measurement uncertainties due to different noise sources in interferometric sonars and a wideband signal processing approach to solve them. Interferomete… Show more

“…The proposed method has higher coverage efficiency than lawnmower path during the early stage, and has the potential to achieve higher overall coverage efficiency by choosing proper weights. (5) Low coverage rate map obtained by the proposed method is more suitable for interpolation than that obtained by lawnmower surveys or spiral surveys. (6) The parameters of the proposed method can be adjusted under different mission goals.…”

“…Interferometric sonars are special side-scan sonars which can produce bathymetry image through differential phase technique. However, they require sophisticated signal processing algorithms to get a satisfied result [5].…”

“…Range and accuracy can also be improved by increasing the pulse length, but this also lowers the spatial resolution of the bottom image. A remedy to this range-resolution trade-off might be the application of FM pulses and matched filter processing [34][35][36]. The application of FM pulses lowers the impact of the shifting footprint.…”
