Interfacing an aspiration ion mobility spectrometer to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer

Abstract: This article presents the combination of an aspiration-type ion mobility spectrometer with a mass spectrometer. The interface between the aspiration ion mobility spectrometer and the mass spectrometer was designed to allow for quick mounting of the aspiration ion mobility spectrometer onto a Sciex API-300 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The developed instrumentation is used for gathering fundamental information on aspiration ion mobility spectrometry. Performance of the instrument is demonstrated using 2,… Show more

“…Pedersen et al used DTBP as an internal standard to minimize the influence of temperature, pressure, and electrical field in the characterization of proton-bound acetate dimers 33. DTBP also has been used to correct mobilities in IMS34 and to demonstrate the performance of ion mobility spectrometers coupled to mass spectrometers 35,36…”

“…Other related IMS methods, high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry [24] and traveling waveform ion mobility spectrometry [25] have been coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometers and shown to provide some degree of resolution between carbohydrate isomers. IMS can also be readily interfaced with other types of mass spectrometers, such as quadrupoles [26], triple quadrupoles [27], quadrupole ion traps [28], and FTICR [29] mass spectrometers. Previous studies using a two-gate IMS system have shown that collision-induced dissociation (CID) MS/MS spectra could be acquired after selectively introducing ions based on mobility into a quadrupole ion trap [28] or an ICR cell [29], although in these studies no sets of isomeric oligosaccharides were investigated.…”

“…The combination of AIMS and quadrupole MS has been reported. This combined instrument is useful to gather fundamental information concerning the functionality of AIMS instrument (Adamov et al, 2007). The principle of FAIMS and its application to MS has been extensively reviewed (Guevremont, 2004a).…”
