Interdisciplinary researching: Exploring the opportunities and risks of working together

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the issues that present both opportunities and risks when working in an interdisciplinary research project. As the research context changes in the social reform environment, some scientists suggest it is time to forge new scientific working relationships, to open up the boundaries between disciplines. Interdisciplinary research is an alternative approach for nurses who might develop different ways of working with health researchers from other disciplines. The ideas in this p… Show more

“…These first include interdisciplinary theory and concepts of group process acknowledging specific skills required for interdisciplinary teamwork (Tuckman, 1977). Interdisciplinary research is challenging and complex and it takes time for a research team to learn the language and perspectives of the people involved (McCallin, 2006). TUTOR-PHC's different components (e.g., symposium, workshops) created the opportunity and provided the time for such processes to take place.…”

“…Although participating in the program can be considered as a form of interdisciplinary team learning, we were working together as a research team focused on knowledge generation (McCallin, 2006), while at the same time actively reflecting on the nature and impact of interprofessional care. TUTOR-PHC allowed us to think about these different forms of interdisciplinary activities more clearly so that we may apply and communicate these concepts accurately in future research.…”

“…Justification for the existence of the VPH has its roots in anticipated clinical, industrial and academic needs, underpinned by the conviction that a crossdiscipline approach to medical endeavours is the only credible way forward in the twenty-first century (Levin et al 2002;Haygarth et al 2005;Hwa et al 2005;McCallin 2006;Zaenker 2006). Four categories of justification are apparent.…”
