Interdependency analysis of lean manufacturing practices in case of Bulgarian SMEs: interpretive structural modelling and interpretive ranking modelling approach

Abstract: Purpose The paper aims to analyse the contextual relationship and dependency amongst enablers for lean manufacturing implementation in Bulgarian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach In this study, the interpretive structural modelling (ISM) technique was used to develop a hierarchical structural model for enablers. Also, the interpretive ranking process (IRP) was used to analyse and rank enablers with reference to performance variables. For the ISM approach, a structural sel… Show more

“…The lack of resources for advanced technologies can hinder Lean in SMEs. For example, the information technology system was highlighted as one of the most important facilitators for implementing Lean in Bulgarian SMEs [85]. The findings indicated that information sharing from digitalization could be the enabler, mainly for VSM, JIT, Lean Supply Chain, performance indicators (e.g., OEE), TPM program, and ERP systems.…”

“…In many organizations, continuous learning and work-related learning are essential for workers to improve their competitiveness [64]. A positive attitude within an organization towards lean manufacturing is important to ensure successful implementation [65]. As the manufacturing competitive landscape increases, there will be a massive demand for workers to reskill and upskill [66].…”
