In today’s globalised business landscape, characterised by a proliferation of multinational corporations employing culturally diverse workforces, intercultural sensitivity is important in facilitating collaboration. Regarding higher education, it has been found that intercultural sensitivity can be increased through time spent abroad, although the results have been shown to vary depending on the specific context. As the impact of time spent abroad on intercultural sensitivity has yet to be examined in the Hungarian context, this study aimed to investigate whether there were significant differences in various components of intercultural sensitivity between Hungarian business students who had spent varying periods abroad. A total of 270 Hungarian business students from a leading Hungarian business university, aged 18-26, completed the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS). The focus was on intercultural sensitivity levels between students who had spent less than one month abroad and those who had spent more than one month abroad. The findings indicated that students who spent more time abroad showed improved confidence in intercultural interactions; however, significant differences for other components of the ISS were not observed. Although the results are specific to the Hungarian or Central European context, the findings provide insight for institutions seeking to design effective exchange programs that promote intercultural competence among students, preparing them for success in the global business environment.

Intercultural communication is often affected by conflicts, which are not easy to resolve, mainly due to the clash of conflict communication styles. Direct/indirect ways to approach conflicts, emotional display/control, the ability to empathize and consider perspectives of others, cultural conventions, previous experiences with conflict, cooperativeness, and many other factors determine our conflict communication styles. It is important to acknowledge, though, that these styles are learned and are not rigid. They can differ depending on the context and situation. This article reports the results of an intercultural telecollaboration project, drawing on four sources of quantitative and qualitative data, i.e., the results of assessments conducted with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, and a Conflict Styles Assessment based on the Thomas–Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, as well as students’ critical self-reflective feedback. The data were collected at a Mid-Atlantic minority-serving university from undergraduate students, who were invited to explore their conflict communication styles through a series of activities and then reflect on their experiences and the insights gained during this intercultural telecollaboration experience. As a result of this pedagogical intervention, most of the participants not only became aware of their conflict communication styles but also developed their empathy and ability to intervene to defend others who are discriminated against or attacked verbally.

Clyne, M. (1994)21 đã nhận xét rằng: "Ngôn ngữ là sự thể hiện sâu sắc nhất một nền văn hoá, hệ thống giá trị bao gồm cả những giá trị thừa hưởng từ cộng đồng và có một vai trò lớn tác động đến cách thức sử dụng không chỉ ngôn ngữ thứ nhất mà cả những ngôn ngữ được tiếp thụ sau đó". Trong hoạt động NCKH, việc sử dụng thành thạo ngôn ngữ thực sự quan trọng, giúp giảng viên có thể thực hiện các công trình NCKH, chuyển tải các ý tưởng, trình bày các định hướng, kết quả nghiên cứu thông qua các sản phẩm khoa học như bài viết đăng trên các tạp chí trong nước và quốc tế, đề tài NCKH, dự án nghiên cứu, hay các đề cương nghiên cứu, hướng dẫn người học thực hiện luận văn, luận án, đề tài NCKH, v.v… Giảng viên cũng cần năng lực ngoại ngữ tốt để có thể công bố khoa học quốc tế cũng như kết nối, hợp tác và tham gia cộng đồng học thuật quốc tế.…”

In today’s multicultural context, intercultural competence is very important, contributing to improving the scientific research quality of lecturers. Lecturers’ intercultural competence in scientific research is the effective application of their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to conduct scientific research. The article employs the method of document research on lecturers’ intercultural competence at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH, VNUHCM). The purpose of the paper is to make clear the theoretical underpinnings and characteristics of lecturers’ intercultural competence in scientific research activities. The research results show that the lecturers at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have the basic elements to form intercultural competence, including lecturers with experience in studying and living abroad and being proficient in foreign languages, in which English is the most proficient compared to other languages, lecturers coming from different regions of the country and a few with dual and multicultural nationality, and lecturers with a capacity to develop and create relationships with colleagues, friends, and learners from various cultures. Based on the analysis of the factors forming lecturers’ intercultural competence, the paper also suggests measures to enhance lecturers’ intercultural competence, including measures to raise awareness of the significance of lecturers’ intercultural competence as well as to improve their language proficiency, and the feasible measures from USSH, VNUHCM.
