Intercropping period between species of green manures and organically-fertilized coffee plantation

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The adequate supply of nitrogen to coffee plantation is one of the main challenges of organic agriculture. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of organic fertilization with two legume species in different intercropping periods on nitrogen nutrition, initial growth and productivity of coffee plantation. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in 2x4 split-plot factorial design, being that the plot consisted of two intercrops (coffee+jack bean and coffee+hyacinth bean) and … Show more

“…In the case of organic coffee, Indonesia (0.50 MT), Ethiopia (0.35 MT), and Mexico (0.12 MT) produced the most raw green coffee [1]. The quality of coffee is determined by many factors, such as the type of production (organic or conventional), plantation localization, and agrotechnical conditions [2,3]. The next steps in production that affect coffee quality are roasting and brewing times.…”

The cycling of P and other nutrients is important for coffee nutrition (Cardoso et al, 2018) due to reductions in costs and dependence on industrial inputs for coffee growing (Vilela et al, 2011). Green manuring is a technique that has shown promising results for coffee plants (Paulo et al, 2006;Araújo et al, 2013;Vilela et al, 2011;Cardoso et al, 2018;Jaeggi et al, 2019;Franco Junior et al, 2019), either in pre-cultivation or intercropped in-between rows of already-established crops.…”
