Intercourse Avoidance among Women with Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Our study suggests that among women with CAD, age, depressive symptoms and somatic comorbidities are associated with avoidance of intercourse. As having intercourse is safe among patients with stable CAD, all health professionals should discuss sexual behaviors with their female CAD patients, especially those that are older, with higher depressive symptoms or multiple comorbidities so as to allay fears about sexual functioning.

“…In several studies to date, sexual avoidance behaviors have generally been associated with different conditions, such as psychiatric diseases (major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc.) [33,34], problems between the couples (lack of intimacy, attachment problems) [35][36][37] or chronic diseases (hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, migraine) [38][39][40][41][42], among other reasons. As the incubation period of COVID-19 can last for up to 2 weeks and individuals can be asymptomatic during that time, it may lead to concerns that the infection could be transmitted during sexual intercourse [43].…”

The study protocol was approved by the local Institutional Review Board and all participants provided consent or assent before each interview.…”

“…Another reason is that more men suffer from MI (at up to 60 years) as compared to women [22]. Another study showed that since women with coronary artery diseases belonged to a much older age group as compared to men, they were less likely to discuss the matter related to sexual activity with their doctors, who also assume them to be sexually inactive, thus ignoring the need for sexual counseling [23][24][25]. These findings demonstrate the need for clinicians to provide sufficient information to both the genders equally about resuming sexual activity after MI.…”
