Intercondylar width as a guide to setting up complete denture teeth

Abstract: A clinical study was designed to investigate the relationship between intercondylar width (ICW) and inter-dental widths of the upper and lower canines and first molars to aid in denture teeth positioning. The study was divided into two parts so that the results of the first part could be verified in the second part. In the first part, 27 adult subjects were selected according to the exclusion criteria of the study. A kinematic hinge axis locator was used to locate the true point of condylar rotation. The dista… Show more

“…In accordance with other studies, 33 a longer period of time after tooth loss can lead to lower mandible height (Table 1) and unfavourable maxillary ridge morphology. Afterwards, in prolonged edentulousness, the resorption of alveolar may result in patients appearing to have an Angle Class III occlusion, 34 which will increase the difficulty of facial aesthetic rehabilitation. Fortunately, all patients in the study still appeared to have an Angle Class I occlusion.…”

“…It also provides adequate clearance for tongue and buccal corridor space and improves the stability of the prosthesis. The ICD of human remains fairly static throughout the life [14]. In this study ICD is calculated by subtracting the intermediate soft tissue thickness from the IFW measured between the two Denar posterior reference points.…”

“…Keshvad et al, [14] investigated that ICD is 3.39 times greater than U3 and 2.19 times of U6 in Sheffield population. This shows that the relationship of ICD to Inter-dental distance varies according to different racial group of population.…”

“…However, the tooth loss inevitably results in the resorption of the residual alveolar ridge to some extent depending upon various mechanical, anatomical and metabolic factors [1] . The maxillary alveolar ridge migrates upwards and inwards whereas the mandibular alveolar ridge migrates downwards and outwards making the arrangement of the artificial teeth more difficult in a patient with long term edentulism [2] . Hence certain stable anatomical landmarks and their relation with the position of natural teeth can be used to arrange the artificial teeth as close to the position as their natural predecessors.…”
