Our X-ray powder diffraction data determine that UTeO 4 has an orthorhombic unit cell with parameters: aϭ10.115Ϯ0.003 Å, bϭ10.706Ϯ0.002 Å, cϭ7.833Ϯ0.002 Å, and vϭ848 Ϯ0.40 (Å) 3 , i.e., the cell volume twice as large as that of UTeO 5 . IR spectral studies show that UTeO 4 and UTeO 5 have almost an identical molecular symmetry. In UTeO 4 , the effective environment of U and Te remains nearly the same as in UTeO 5 and the UO 2 group is noncentrosymmetric and nonlinear with little or no interaction with equatorial oxygen. Frequencies of the characteristic stretching bands of UTeO 4 are ͑cm Ϫ1 ͒: as ͑OvUvO͒ϭ945, s ͑OvUvO͒ϭ880, s ͑Te-O͒eqϭ818, as ͑Te-O͒eqϭ749, as ͑Te-O͒axϭ649, s ͑Te-O͒axϭ561.
