Interannual variability of the eastward current in the western South China Sea associated with the summer Asian monsoon

Abstract: The interannual variability of the eastward current in the western South China Sea (SCS) during the summer of 1993-2012 is examined with satellite altimeter data and Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) model output. It is found that the meridional location of the eastward current displays apparent interannual variability. The core of the eastward current shifts between 10.7 N and 17.6 N with a standard deviation of 1.6 . Results from Sverdrup theory and ROMS experiments demonstrate a close dynamic linkage be… Show more

“…This can be detected in the climatological summer pattern (colorful streamlines in Figure a). Between these two gyres is a strong eastward current jet near 11°N, which is highly correlated with the summertime southwest monsoon [ Chen and Wang , ; Li et al ., ].…”

“…In summer, there is a strong anticyclonic gyre in the southern SCS and a weaker cyclonic gyre north of 11°N [ Wang et al ., ; Chen et al ., ]. Between these two gyres is a strong eastward oceanic jet, which originates from the coastal area off Vietnam [ Fang et al ., ; Liu et al ., ] and transports cold coastal water and nutrients offshore [ Xie et al ., ; Chen et al , ]; this current jet is identifiable by its accompanying upwelling characteristics [ Kuo et al ., ]. Xie et al .…”

“…To investigate the causes of the meridional shifts of the cold filaments, we calculate the average locations of cold filaments and the associated eastward currents in each year from 2003 to 2013 (Figure ). It is noted that the zero vorticity contour of the dipole is used to present the core location of the eastward current [ Chen and Wang , ]. The correlation between the average locations of cold filaments and the associated eastward currents reaches 0.84, which is significant at the 95% confidence level.…”

“…Based on modeling results, variation of the upper-layer circulation in the SCS associated with ENSO was detected (Wu et al 1998;Xie et al 2003;Liu et al 2004;Wu and Chang 2005;Y. G. Wang et al 2006;Chang et al 2008;Liu et al 2011;Li et al 2014;Chen and Wang 2014). By combining different observational and assimilative data, Fang et al (2006) and Yang and Wu (2012) estimated the trend of the surface circulation, wind, SST, and SSH.…”
