Interactive Relationship among Urban Expansion, Economic Development, and Population Growth since the Reform and Opening up in China: An Analysis Based on a Vector Error Correction Model

Abstract: Based on cointegration analysis, a vector error correction model (VECM), and the impulse response function method, this paper empirically analyses the interaction among urban expansion, economic development, and population growth in China from 1980 to 2016. The results show that (I) there is a long-term equilibrium relationship among urban expansion, economic development and population growth, but there is an imbalance in the short term. When urban expansion deviates from the long-term equilibrium, it cannot b… Show more

“…In the USA, early spatial form of sprawl occurred after World War II because the perception of the new suburb is safer, more desirable and cheaper than urban alternatives (Benites-Gambirazio, 2017;Franklin & Plane, 2019;Dibble et al, 2019). In Asia, most recently China and India are experiencing the largest and most rapid urban sprawl because of their enormous economic transformation (You, 2016;Lv et al, 2016;Du, 2017;Zhang & Xie, 2019;Shao et al, 2020). Thus, urban sprawl has been conceptualized in a multidimensional way, instigated by different values, driven by different forces, shaped by different characteristics, but sharing similar consequences to sustainable social, economic, political and environmental development.…”

“…The clustering of firms in space of the same or related industries can be deemed as the process of localization and urbanization economies (Mastronardi and Cavallo 2020 ; Beckers et al 2018 ). As these industries agglomerate, the local labor markets in cities must examine both productivity impacts and linkages within the growth process (Zhang and Xie 2019 ; Venables 2007 ). A shift of employment distribution and the effect on the spatial sprawling or shrinkage is considered.…”

“…These six factors are positively associated with changes in spatial use, social formation, and ecosystem complexity. These conditions have an impact on social differentiation related to economic income, social status, lifestyle, consumption patterns, and living conditions, and highlight the differentiation and combination of social groups in geographical space [69].…”
