Interactive Narrative in Virtual Reality

Abstract: Interactive fiction is a literary genre that is rapidly gaining popularity. In this genre, readers are able to explicitly take actions in order to guide the course of the story. With the recent popularity of narrative focused games, we propose to design and develop an interactive narrative tool for content creators. In this extended abstract, we show how we leverage this interactive medium to present a tool for interactive storytelling in virtual reality. Using a simple markup language, content creators and re… Show more

“…The table highlights a gap in the literature, as no authoring tool currently exists for the creation of a narrative that can automatically adapt to the reader. This motivated our work and the design of PIF as a tool which relies on a simple markup language and which uses physiology as an alternative input to explicit interactions from the reader, extending on earlier proofs of concept [18,52]. To favour adoption and dissemination of physiologically driven narratives, PIF is based on Inkle's Ink [30], which can be ported to web or phone environments.…”

“…Exposing the subjects to real-life narrative situations in mixed realties and comparing the results with the non-VR condition, they show that the immersive narratives lead to higher attention and engagement (Natkin et al, 2007). We also found studies investigating the effects of VR on user experience, VR as a narrative medium, and some elaborating on how narrative tools can be used in VR (Aylett & Louchart, 2003;Nakevska et al, 2017;Olsson & Salo, 2012;Ostrin et al, 2018).…”
