Interactive Lenses for Visualization: An Extended Survey

Abstract: The elegance of using virtual interactive lenses to provide alternative visual representations for selected regions of interest is highly valued, especially in the realm of visualization. Today, more than 50 lens techniques are known in the closer context of visualization, far more in related fields. In this paper, we extend our previous survey on interactive lenses for visualization. We propose a definition and a conceptual model of lenses as extensions of the classic visualization pipeline. An extensive revi… Show more

“…In the area of visualization, however, many promising solutions have been explored, including a vast array of perceptually‐motivated illustrative rendering approaches [PBC∗16], and several interactive tools connected to illustrative methods, such as interactive lenses [TGK∗17]. We foresee as a promising research direction the integration and further development of these techniques into the MLIC visualization and analysis pipeline.…”

“…Distortion‐Based Second, distortion‐based approaches can alleviate the impact of occlusion by distorting a map, emphasizing areas and presenting more or different information than compared to the undistorted original scale of the map. A recent survey by Tominski et al [TGK*17] provides an extensive overview on the current approaches. Classical distortion‐based techniques such as the graphical Fisheye Views introduced by Sarkar and Brown [SB94] mostly employ a uniform distortion, such as a circle fading out the distortion radially around the center of focus.…”

“…The implementation details concerning the language's interpreter do not seem to be available for comparison with our method. Tominski et al provide a recent extended survey on the generalization of a common technique in Focus+Context visualization termed the “Interactive Lens” [TGK*17]. Our design incorporates several lenses that are categorized by their survey.…”
