Interactive Health Communication Applications for people with chronic disease

Abstract: IHCAs appear to have largely positive effects on users, in that users tend to become more knowledgeable, feel better socially supported, and may have improved behavioural and clinical outcomes compared to non-users. There is a need for more high quality studies with large sample sizes to confirm these preliminary findings, to determine the best type and best way to deliver IHCAs, and to establish how IHCAs have their effects for different groups of people with chronic illness.

“…Obviously the success of Internet interventions will depend not only on patient acceptance but also on treatment success, and efficacy trials will remain a critical part of the expanding Internet intervention literature (Murray, Burns, See, Lai, & Nazareth, 2005;Ritterband et al, 2003;Wantland et al, 2004). This indication of patient acceptance does, however, add support for the notion that Internet interventions have considerable potential for delivering structured behavioural programs.…”

“…Generally there is evidence of high patient satisfaction ratings for telerehabilitation, but reviewers argue that more process research, case studies and qualitative studies are needed to improve our understanding of these outcomes [74]. Interactive health communication applications (IHCAs) for people with chronic disease appear to give benefit in terms of improved support, better knowledge and improved health outcomes, but the authors asked for more larger studies to be conducted [75].…”

“…Interactive health communication applications (IHCAs) for people with chronic diseases that are Internet based and that incorporate health information, chronic care principles, and tailored support for health-behavior change, have been shown to increase patient health knowledge, self-efficacy, and health-related behaviors [1][2][3]. IHCAs have great potential to augment care for diabetes and other chronic conditions by providing round-the-clock access to the tools and encouragement needed to support daily chronic disease self-management.…”
