ABSTRACT:Informal settlements are a common occurrence in South Africa, and to improve in-situ circumstances of communities living in informal settlements, upgrades and urban design processes are necessary. Spatial data and maps are essential throughout these processes to understand the current environment, plan new developments, and communicate the planned developments. All stakeholders need to understand maps to actively participate in the process. However, previous research demonstrated that map literacy was relatively low for many planning professionals in South Africa, which might hinder effective planning. Because 3D visualizations resemble the real environment more than traditional maps, many researchers posited that they would be easier to interpret. Thus, our goal is to investigate the effectiveness of 3D geovisualizations for urban design in informal settlement upgrading in South Africa. We consider all involved processes: 3D modelling, visualization design, and cognitive processes during map reading. We found that procedural modelling is a feasible alternative to time-consuming manual modelling, and can produce high quality models. When investigating the visualization design, the visual characteristics of 3D models and relevance of a subset of visual variables for urban design activities of informal settlement upgrades were qualitatively assessed. The results of three qualitative user experiments contributed to understanding the impact of various levels of complexity in 3D city models and map literacy of future geoinformatics and planning professionals when using 2D maps and 3D models. The research results can assist planners in designing suitable 3D models that can be used throughout all phases of the process.

In today's world, interactive architecture is a process-oriented guide to creating dynamic spaces capable of performing a range of pragmatic and humanistic functions. While this architecture is evolving rapidly, its implementation in some developing countries is not very feasible. Iran is one of the developing countries that is seeking to learn more about use of new technologies in the construction industry to create new ideas for the future of architecture. Tehran as the capital of Iran has the proper capacities for implementing interactive architecture. Due to the main focus of the research on the future of interactive technologies in Tehran and to benefit from expert views, the Delphi method was used to collect the required information. According to the new concept of interactive architecture in Tehran, purposeful sampling was applied and only experts who have sufficient expertise in both interactive architecture and contemporary Iranian architecture were selected to respond. After collecting the responses in the questionnaire, they were converted to numerical scales to analyse the impact of the different factors in the future of Tehran's architecture. Results show that in Tehran, in the three main areas of technology, economy and culture, constraints exist for the implementation of real interactive architecture.

Abstract:Engineering projects often face a great number of uncertainties which will lead projects to deviate from the anticipated objective. This paper carried out a detailed study on real-time monitoring of objective deviation in engineering projects, and it will help project managers monitor the state of engineering project better. A Grid Management (GM) method was used to set up a monitor structure, and the real-time monitor grid structure was constructed in level, milestone and objective dimensions. The buffer analysis method was designed to measure the level of objective deviation. The objective deviation level is based on the result of the grid cell buffer analysis. The principal part construction of Shenyang Olympic Tennis court was selected as the example to illustrate the real-time monitor process in detail. The results indicated that the proposed real-time objective monitor method makes it possible for project manager to real-time monitor all the main objectives in one model and carry out management, and decision-making in a more macro perspective.
