Interactions of Trivalent Lanthanide Cations with a New Hexadentate Di‐Schiff Base: New Lanthanide(III) Complexes from (NE,NE)‐2,2‐(ethane‐1,2‐diylbis(oxy))bis(N‐(pyridin‐2‐ylmethylene)ethanamine)

Abstract: The novel lanthanide(III) complexes [Ln(NO3)2L](NO3)·3MeOH (Ln = La 1, Pr 2) and [Ln(NO3)3L](NO3)·2MeOH (Ln = Gd 3, Yb 4), where L = (NE,N′E)-2,2′-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethanamine), have been obtained by direct reaction of the Schiff base ligand and the corresponding hydrated lanthanide(III) nitrates in methanol. All complexes were characterized spectroscopically and thermogravimetrically. Complex 4 was also characterized with crystallographic studies: orthorhombic P212121, a = … Show more

“…The easily preparation route of this kind and its ability of forming metal complexes with different metal ions makes chemists very interesting in synthesis and characterization of Schiff bases and their complexes (3,4) . Schiff bases have different chelation behavior, where it able to coordinate with metal ions as momo- (5) , bi- (6) , tri- (3,4,7) , tetra- (8) , penta- (9) , hexa (10) -, and heptadentate (11) . Schiff bases complexes have various applications in catalytic field (12,13) .…”

“…A number of different synthetic methods have been established to prepare a plethora of Schiff base ligands, involving condensation reactions between ketones or aldehydes and amines. In previous work from our laboratory N,N,N,N tetradentate Schiff base ligands, derived from the reactions of 1,2-diaminobenzene [10,11] or ethylenediamine [12,13] with 2-acetylpyridine or 2-pyridinecarboxyaldehyde under mild conditions, as well as their transition metal or lanthanide [14][15][16][17] complexes, were synthesized and characterized. However, the reaction of 1,2-diaminobenzene with 2-acetylpyridine, under prolonged heating, led to an unexpected cyclocondensation, forming the compound 2-(2 0 -pyridyl)quinoxaline [18].…”
