Interactions of Manifest Anxiety Score with Anagram Letter Transition Probability and Thorndike-Lorge Frequency of Solution Word

Abstract: In an experiment designed for further exploration of the effects of manifest anxiety upon anagram problem solving, two levels each of manifest anxiety score, letter transition probability of anagram, and Thorndike-Lorge frequency of solution word were factorially combined (N = 40 male and 40 female freshmen and sophomores). While corroborating the previous findings that anagram solving rate is positively related to solution word frequency and negatively related to anagram letter transition probability, the res… Show more

“…Further, Reich and Zautra (2002) have suggested that high stress results in simplified cognitive processing, such that the ability to simultaneously process information, discriminate among choices, and make judgments is impaired during stress. Cognitive rigidity is also associated with anxiety (Dey, 1978;Tomasini, 1973;Harleston, Smith, & Arey, 1965), where drugs impacting the NE system demonstrate beneficial effects. For example, adolescents with known test anxiety benefited from propranolol with improved scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) (Faigel, 1991).…”

“…The 16 anagrams included on the form were taken from a study conducted by Richardson and Johnson (1980) and were rank ordered for difficulty based upon the mean completion time data collected by the researcher. Anagrams were chosen as a skill task because research has shown that the presence of anxiety does not decrease an individual's ability to solve anagrams under nonthreatening conditions (Dey, 1978;Sarason, 1961). An Anagram Rating Form SUDs scores handout (ASSH) was also developed, and paralleled the one developed for the CDMTRF in that subjects were directed to rate their level of anxiety on a 0-100 scale for each anagram attempted.…”
