Interactions between Poly(N-vinylformamide) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate As Studied by Fluorescence and Two-Dimensional NOE NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract: The interaction of poly(N-vinylformamide) (PNVF) with anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), has been studied by pyrene fluorescence and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D NOESY). With use of pyrene as the probe, from low to high concentration of SDS, the pyrene I 1 /I 3 plot exhibits three stages of association of PNVF with SDS. The I 1 /I 3 plot vs [SDS] shows a well-defined plateau (I 1 /I 3 ) 1.47) at SDS concentrations ranging between 3 and 10 mM, indicating that in this… Show more

“…The smaller the micelle aggregation number is, the looser the molecular arrangement of surfactants in the micelles. Therefore, the number of water molecules around carbon chains for the SDBS/SOE‐60‐PVP system was higher than for SDBS/SOE‐60 solutions, and the I 1 / I 3 value of the SDBS/SOE‐60‐PVP system was larger than that of SDBS/SOE‐60 aqueous solutions …”

“…Therefore, the number of water molecules around carbon chains for the SDBS/SOE-60-PVP system was higher than for SDBS/SOE-60 solutions, and the I 1 /I 3 value of the SDBS/SOE-60-PVP system was larger than that of SDBS/SOE-60 aqueous solutions. 30 For the SDBS/SOE-60-PVP system, first the I 1 /I 3 values dropped with increasing surfactant concentration; this may be due to the formation of premixed micelles. As the SDBS concentration ranged from cac to psp, I 1 /I 3 values increased; this may be due to the aggregation number of the binding mixed micelles decreasing with increasing surfactant concentration.…”

“…2D NOESY spectroscopy is a powerful technique for investigating the interactions between two different components in close proximity (<0.5 nm) . In the present work, 2D NOESY spectroscopy was employed to study the interactions between cellobiose and TEA + in DMSO‐ d 6 where cellobiose was taken as a model compound to study the interactions between cellulose and TEA + in DMSO .…”

“…Sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) -C12H25OSO3Na -, probably the most researched anionic surfactant, is used in household products due to its thickening properties and its ability to make foam. The molecule has a tail of 12 carbon atoms, attached to a sulphate group, giving the molecule the amphiphilic properties required of a detergent [9,10]. (Figure 1) https://doi.org/10.51910/ijhdr.v8i26.324 SDS dissolved in water forms aggregates whose thermodynamic properties are well known as well as the association of SDS with inorganic salts and polymers.…”
