Interactions between ozone and plant cuticles

Abstract: Sl'MM.AH't''I'he Hux of ozone to plant surfiiccs results in its decompo.sition at the .surface and its uptiike through the cuticle. Ozone deposition \el<)cit\' and ozone permeance were determined for a \-ariety of isolated plant cuticles. Ozone deposition veloeity was lower than determined with whole plants kept in darkness. It declined continuously during exposure to the gas and showed a 'recovery' effect after an interruption of the fumigation. It increased with the moisture content of the cuticles and decre… Show more

“…It is generally accepted that the damage of O 3 to plants is mainly caused by the amount of O 3 entering into the leaf interior through the open stomata (Kerstiens and Lendzian, 1989). Stomatal conductance of plants is one of the crucial mechanisms of O 3 sensitivity (Dumont et al, 2013;Guidi et al, 2001).…”

“…The cuticle is virtually impermeable to O $ , so the flux of the pollutant to the leaf interior is predominantly controlled by stomatal aperture (Kersteins & Lendzian, 1989). Once inside the leaf, the aqueous phase of the cell wall (the apoplast) constitutes a near-perfect sink for the pollutant (Laisk et al, 1989).…”

“…Ozone enters the leaf via stomata (Kerstiens & Lendzian, 1989). Since stomata are closed or almost closed at night, it was decided to include only ozone levels during daylight when establishing critical levels for plants (Bull, 1996).…”
