One of the most studied emergent functions of plant community diversity is the resistance of diverse communities to non‐native invasions. As emphasized in this Special Feature, facilitation among native species is a key mechanism by which biodiversity increases various functions, including resistance to invasion. However, when diverse assemblages facilitate non‐native species, diversity–invasibility resistance may be compromised. Here, I review the scientific literature on plant invasion in which facilitative interactions, either among native and non‐native plant species or among non‐native species, affect community invasibility. Native species can directly facilitate non‐native species, and also generate net indirect facilitative effects through suppressing species that compete with non‐native invaders, but examples of the latter are not common. Such direct and indirect facilitation among non‐native species contributes to ‘invasional meltdown’ that restructures native communities. In general, facilitative interactions between native and non‐native species increased with environmental stress, suggesting that community diversity might resist invasion more effectively in environmentally favourable sites, whereas in environmentally severe sites, facilitative interactions may contribute to invasibility. Synthesis. Native and non‐native species can facilitate each other in direct and indirect ways, with important consequences for the invasibility of communities. Facilitative interactions may alter the fundamental relationship between diversity and invasibility, particularly in environmentally severe habitats.

Impacts of Global Change on the Spatial Dynamics of Treeline in Venezuelan Andes

The treeline in the Andes is considered an essential ecotone between the Montane forest and Páramo. This treeline in the Venezuelan Andes corresponds with a transitional ecosystem defined as the Páramo forest. In this work, we identify and analyze the impact of climate warming and land transformation as agents altering the Páramo forest ecosystem’s spatial dynamics along the Venezuelan Andes’ altitudinal gradient. We carry out multitemporal studies of 57 years of the land transformation at different landscapes of the Cordillera de Mérida and made a detailed analysis to understand the replacement of the ecosystems potential distribution. We found that the main ecosystem transition is from Páramo to the Páramo forest and from Páramo to the Montane forest. Based on the difference between the current lower Páramo limit and the Forest upper limit for 1952, the treeline border’s displacement is 72.7 m in the 57 years of study, representing ∼12.8 m per decade. These changes are mainly driven by climate warming and are carried out through an ecological process of densification of the woody composition instead of the shrubland structure. We found that Páramo forest ecosystems practically have been replaced by the Pastures and fallow vegetation, and the Crops. We present a synthesis of the transition and displacement of the different ecosystems and vegetation types in the treeline zone. The impact of climate warming and deforestation on the Páramo forest as a representative ecosystem of the treeline shows us that this study is necessary for an integrated global change adaptation plan.

Los gradientes altitudinales pueden generar límites ambientales, influyendo en el crecimiento y desarrollo de las especies vegetales. Se tuvo por objetivo identificar las variaciones edafoclimáticas en gradientes altitudinales y su influencia en los bosques tropicales. Se buscaron artículos de investigación con ámbito geográfico entre 27º N y 27º S de latitud, con influencia de gradientes altitudinales entre 0 m y 5000 m. Se sistematizó la información, organizándose en temáticas del clima, en las propiedades fisicoquímicas y biológicas del suelo, y en el comportamiento de las especies forestales. Se determinó que la temperatura media anual (TMA) disminuye conforme aumenta la altitud; y la precipitación anual (PA) presenta máximos pluviales en altitudes medias. Los valores del pH del suelo disminuyen hasta 3000 m, aumentando sobre esta altitud; sin embargo, la materia orgánica, carbono orgánico, carbono total (CT), nitrógeno total (NT) y la relación C/N del suelo aumentan hasta 3000 m; sobre esta altitud los valores disminuyen. El potasio (K), el calcio (Ca), el magnesio (Mg), el fierro (Fe), y el aluminio (Al) del suelo disminuyen con el aumento de la altitud por influencia de las bajas temperaturas y humedad del suelo (HS). La variación edafoclimática en los gradientes altitudinales interactúa con las especies forestales, afectando las respuestas fisiológicas, disminuyendo su crecimiento y altura con el aumento de la altitud; del mismo modo disminuye su densidad y diversidad con el aumento de la altitud. Las especies forestales de los trópicos prosperan en amplios o estrechos límites altitudinales y edafoclimáticos, por lo que identificar estos límites es fundamental no solo en términos ecológicos, sino también políticos y económicos, para diseñar políticas efectivas de uso de la tierra y de conservación.
