Interactions between human eosinophils and schistosomula of schistosoma mansoni. II. The mechanism of irreversible eosinophil adherence

Abstract: We have reported elsewhere (1) 1 that normal human eosinophils adhere to schistosomula of Schistosoma mansoni, in the presence of heat-inactivated sera from patients with schistosomiasis, to a much greater extent than do neutrophils. This finding was surprising, because neutrophils are generally considered to bear more Fc receptors (FcR) for bound IgG than do eosinophils (2-5). On further study, it became apparent that the initiation of adherence by both cell types was a temperature-independent reaction involv… Show more

“…Key words: schistosomiasis -eosinophils -activation markers -L-selectin Eosinophils have been shown to play a major role in the immune response to helminthic infections (Butterworth et al 1979, Hamann et al 1987. In this context, transendothelial migration is essential for eosinophil recruitment from blood vessels into inflammatory tissues.…”

“…Interestingly, the frequency of CD62L + -eosinophils and a range of cell activation related molecules pointed out an opposite pattern of association in NI and INT, where only INT patients that display lower frequency of CD62L + -eosinophils (first CD62L tertile) kept the unusual relationship between the expression of L-selectin and the CD23 activation marker. These findings suggest that distinct dynamic of activation markers expressed by eosinophils may occur during chronic S. mansoni infection.Key words: schistosomiasis -eosinophils -activation markers -L-selectin Eosinophils have been shown to play a major role in the immune response to helminthic infections (Butterworth et al 1979, Hamann et al 1987. “…As early as a century ago, the eosinophil was identified to be associated with various conditions, most of which we now recognize as Th2-related diseases. The 1970s and 1980s witnessed an upsurge in interest in the capacity of the eosinophil to adhere to and kill metazoan helminth parasites, in vitro (3,4). Circa the same era, elegant clinical observations of Gleich and others established a close correlation between secreted eosinophil crystalloid granule-stored cationic proteins and tissue damage in asthma (5,6).…”
