Interactions between fawns and does of farmed fallow deer Dama dama in the postnatal period

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to describe the suckling behavior of the offspring of farmed European fallow deer Dama dama in the postnatal period. Video surveillance footage from the first 18 days postpartum was analyzed in detail to reveal that the duration of interactions between the mother and the offspring changed with the fawns' age. The duration of mother-offspring interactions was longest between postpartum days 12 and 18. The frequency of interactions at different times of the day varied in the anal… Show more

“…The author reported that fawns were fed 7-8 times a day in an intensive farming system and only 4-5 times in an extensive farming system. The suckling bout frequencies reported in the present study are similar to those observed by Clutton-Brock & Guinness (1975) in cervids and by Mulley (2007) and Janiszewski et al (2018) in extensive fallow deer breeding. Moreover, the feeding activity was concentrated in the morning and in the evening, as shown by Mattiello et al (1997).…”

“…A characteristic group is the so-called "kindergarten", i.e., a group of 2-month-old fawns playing and foraging together at a short distance from the does. Over time, these groups disintegrate and the juveniles join the doe herd (Cilulko, 2011 a, b;Janiszewski et al, 2014).…”

“…The role of hinds is also to teach their offspring to ingest and select appropriate food. Obviously, young animals take up the same minerals as those contained in the food consumed by their mothers in the food selection process (Ceacero et al, 2010a;Janiszewski et al, 2018). The choice of food is also determined by physiological effort, age, sex, and physiological condition of the animal (Ceacero et al, 2010b).…”

“…In many countries, the demand for game meat exceeds the production capacity of free-living populations; hence, it has to be supplemented with farmed meat [ 20 , 23 ]. Farm rearing of red deer and fallow deer for meat originated in New Zealand [ 24 ]. In Poland, red deer farming is legally sanctioned and has been developing steadily since 2001 [ 25 ].…”
