Eigenvector-Centrality (EC) has shown promising results in the field of Psychiatry, with early results also pertaining to ADHD. Parallel efforts have focused on the description of aberrant interhemispheric coordination in ADHD, as measured by Voxel-Mirrored-Homotopic-Connectivity (VMHC), with early evidence of altered Resting-State fMRI. A sample was collected from the ADHD200-NYU initiative: 86 neurotypicals and 89 participants with ADHD between 7 and 18 years old were included after quality control for motion. After preprocessing, voxel-wise EC and VMHC values between diagnostic groups were compared, and network-level values from 15 functional networks extracted. Age, ADHD severity (Connor’s Parent Rating-Scale), IQ (Wechsler-Abbreviated-Scale), and right-hand dominance were correlated with EC/VMHC values in the whole sample and within groups, both at the voxel-wise and network-level. Motion was controlled by censoring time-points with Framewise-Displacement > 0.5 mm, as well as controlling for group differences in mean Framewise-Displacement values. EC was significantly higher in ADHD compared to neurotypicals in the left inferior Frontal lobe, Lingual gyri, Peri-Calcarine cortex, superior and middle Occipital lobes, right inferior Occipital lobe, right middle Temporal gyrus, Fusiform gyri, bilateral Cuneus, right Precuneus, and Cerebellum (FDR-corrected-p = 0.05). No differences were observed between groups in voxel-wise VMHC. EC was positively correlated with ADHD severity scores at the network level (at p-value < 0.01, Inattentive: Cerebellum rho = 0.273; Hyper/Impulsive: High-Visual Network rho = 0.242, Cerebellum rho = 0.273; Global Index Severity: High-Visual Network rho = 0.241, Cerebellum rho = 0.293). No differences were observed between groups for motion (p = 0.443). While EC was more related to ADHD psychopathology, VMHC was consistently and negatively correlated with age across all networks.

The auditory system relies on both local and summary representations; acoustic local features exceeding system constraints are compacted into a set of summary statistics. Such compression is pivotal for sound-object recognition. Here, we assessed whether computations subtending local and statistical representations of sounds could be distinguished at the neural level. A computational auditory model was employed to extract auditory statistics from natural sound textures (i.e., fire, rain) and to generate synthetic exemplars where local and statistical properties were controlled. Twenty-four human participants were passively exposed to auditory streams while the EEG was recorded. Each stream could consist of short, medium, or long sounds to vary the amount of acoustic information. Short and long sounds were expected to engage local or summary statistics representations, respectively. Data revealed a clear dissociation. Compared to summary-based ones, auditory-evoked responses based on local information were selectively greater in magnitude in short sounds. Opposite patterns emerged for longer sounds. Neural oscillations revealed that local features and summary statistics rely on neural activity occurring at different temporal scales, faster (beta) or slower (theta-alpha). These dissociations emerged automatically without explicit engagement in a discrimination task. Overall, this study demonstrates that the auditory system developed distinct coding mechanisms to discriminate changes in the acoustic environment based on fine structure and summary representations.Significance StatementPrior to this study, it was unknown whether we could measure auditory discrimination based on local temporal features or spectrotemporal statistics properties of sounds from brain responses. Results show that the two auditory modes of sound discrimination (local and summary statistics) are automatically attuned to the temporal resolution (high or low) at which a change has occurred. In line with the temporal resolutions of auditory statistics, faster or slower neural oscillations (temporal scales) code sound changes based on local or summary representations. These findings expand our knowledge of some fundamental mechanisms underlying the function of the auditory system.

The auditory system relies on local and global representations, depending on the amount of entering temporal details. When local information exceeds system constraints, acoustic details are summarized into a set of average statistics and global structure emerges. Whether computations subtending local and global representations of sounds can be distinguished at the cortical level is unknown. A computational auditory model was employed to extract auditory statistics from natural sound textures, such as fire, wind, and rain, and generate synthetic exemplars in which we had control of local and global properties. Participants were passively exposed to auditory streams with triplets of sounds including two standards and an oddball while the EEG was recorded. In Local Discrimination (exp 1) the oddball sound varied from standards only for its local features; in Global Discrimination (exp 2), it varied for its global structure. Different sound durations were employed to manipulate the amount of acoustic information and statistical variability between standards and oddballs. We expected short and long sounds to engage local (exp 1) or global (exp 2) representations, respectively. As predicted, neural responses associated with local discriminations exceeded global ones for short sounds, whereas the opposite pattern emerged for longer sounds. Electrical source estimates revealed that local discriminations mainly engaged auditory regions of the right hemisphere, while global discriminations of the left hemisphere. These findings revealed distinct neural correlates of acoustic discriminations guided by local or global structures. Ultimately results demonstrated that the auditory system developed a functional architecture to automatically detect changes occurring in the environment based on these two modes of sound representation.SIGNIFICANT STATEMENTPrior to this study, it was not known whether it was possible to directly measure auditory cortical representations of sound discriminations depending on local or global acoustic properties. Results unveiled the existence of a mechanisms which pre-attentively determines at which timescale (local or global) a change in a stream occurred based on statistical variability between sound excerpts. By performing source reconstruction, we additionally revealed that the response to local change detection pertains to different cortical structures as compared to global one, displaying also hemispheric asymmetries. These findings expand our knowledge on fundamental mechanisms characterizing auditory system functioning.
