Resilience, Leadership and Female Entrepreneurship within the Context of SMEs: Evidence from Latin America

The purpose of this article is to analyze resilient female leadership as a sustainable promoter of business excellence in small and medium-sized Wayuu handicraft marketing enterprises. The present study uses a quantitative methodology with a non-experimental cross-sectional field design, with an analysis and interpretation of the data provided by the surveyed subjects. A 33-item questionnaire with multiple response options is applied. The population consists of 110.012 eradicated women. A probabilistic sampling technique is applied with a margin of error of 5% and a confidence level of 95%, for a total of 383 Wayuu women entrepreneurs in the Department of La Guajira, Colombia. Our findings explain that female leadership transcends the boundaries of business management, being present in both small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This study confirms the positive relationship between sustainability and resilience in the Wayuu handicrafts market, being women who turn their actions into success factors by working with women who show technical, conceptual, and human skills.

Controlling the Evolution of Selective Vancomycin Resistance through Successful Ophthalmic Eye-Drop Preparation of Vancomycin-Loaded Nanoliposomes Using the Active-Loading Method

Vancomycin is the front-line defense and drug of choice for the most serious and life-threatening methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, poor vancomycin therapeutic practice limits its use, and there is a consequent rise of the threat of vancomycin resistance by complete loss of its antibacterial activity. Nanovesicles as a drug-delivery platform, with their featured capabilities of targeted delivery and cell penetration, are a promising strategy to resolve the shortcomings of vancomycin therapy. However, vancomycin’s physicochemical properties challenge its effective loading. In this study, we used the ammonium sulfate gradient method to enhance vancomycin loading into liposomes. Depending on the pH difference between the extraliposomal vancomycin–Tris buffer solution (pH 9) and the intraliposomal ammonium sulfate solution (pH 5–6), vancomycin was actively and successfully loaded into liposomes (up to 65% entrapment efficiency), while the liposomal size was maintained at 155 nm. Vancomycin-loaded nanoliposomes effectively enhanced the bactericidal effect of vancomycin; the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value for MRSA decreased 4.6-fold. Furthermore, they effectively inhibited and killed heteroresistant vancomycin-intermediate S.aureous (h-VISA) with an MIC of 0.338 μg mL−1. Moreover, MRSA could not develop resistance against vancomycin that was loaded into and delivered by liposomes. Vancomycin-loaded nanoliposomes could be a feasible solution for enhancing vancomycin’s therapeutic use and controlling the emerging vancomycin resistance.

Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) has been used as the buffer in bioactivity testing for over two decades and has become a standard choice for the scientific community. While it is believed to be non-interacting, the extent of its interactions with titanium oxide surfaces has not been systematically studied. Here, we use experimental (zeta potential measurements) and computational (molecular dynamics) approaches to evaluate the interaction of Tris with a rutile surface and how it affects the adsorption of other molecules relevant in biomedical in vitro testing. We show that the interaction of Tris with the rutile surface is strong and significantly affects the interaction of other organic residues with the surface. These strong interactions are compounded by the Tris concentration in the in vitro testing protocol which is much higher compared to other components. Our findings indicate that the kinetics observed in in vitro tests will be strongly influenced by the presence of Tris as a buffering agent when compared to the natural CO 2 buffer in blood. These results reveal that considering the so-far neglected active role of Tris in in vitro testing is critically needed and that in vitro protocols using CO 2 partial pressure as the buffering agent should yield more reliable results.
