Interaction of single and multi wall carbon nanotubes with the biological systems: tau protein and PC12 cells as targets

Abstract: Subtle changes in the structure of nanoparticles influence their surface tension and corresponding interaction with cells and proteins. Here, the interaction of the single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with different surface tension with tau protein was evaluated using a variety of techniques including far and near circular dichroism, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, Zeta potential, and TEM evaluation. Also the cytotoxicity of SWCNT and MWCNT on the PC12… Show more

“…Most cytotoxicity research in the literature has used the concentration range of carbon nanotubes between 0.1 and 200 μg mL −1 with maximum incubation up to 96 h on different types of normal cell lines [3740]. This is because carbon nanotubes is generally associated with a concentration- and time-dependent increase in cell death as investigated by the use of the MTT assay.…”

“…SWCNT and MWCNT were synthesized according to the protocol developed previously at the Department of Biophysics of the University of Tehran and obtained as a donation . The diameter of the SWCNT was in the range of 1.3–2.3 nm and MWCNT was 5.5 nm.…”

“…In neuronal cells, microtubule‐associated proteins, namely tau proteins, play a major role in MT polymerization and axon growth . In vitro interaction between tau proteins and NPs such as iron NPs and CNTs have been previously described in the literature. Based on a recent study in SH‐SY5Y neuroblastoma cells by Mao et al, the interaction between TiO 2 NPs and tau proteins resulted in a decrease in MT density, disorganization, and disruption of MT.…”
