“…The objective environment is usually assessed by using outside observers or the consensus perceived ratings of those people constituting the environment. This second assessment method, that of obtaining the aggregate or mean of the perceived ratings, is assumed more valid as it is not constrained by the limited information available to the observer or the observer's own rating idiosyncrasies (Daher, Corrazini, & McKinnon, 1977;Harpin & Sandler, 1979;Moos, 1979;Nielsen & Moos, 1978). With the exception of French et al (1974), very few studies have included assessment of P-E fit using both the perceived and objective measures of the environment.…”

“…As a concrete test of these hypotheses the present study attempts to replicate the findings of Harpin and Sandler's (1979) person-environment interactional study with the added prediction that high and low relevance will moderate the person-environment interaction. In the prior study (Harpin & Sandier, 1979) we found an interaction between the perceived classroom environment of academic locus of control on student adjustment and classroom grades. External students were found to have more adjustment problems in low-control classrooms than in high-control classrooms, while internal students received better grades in low-than in high-control classrooms.…”

“…Maladjustment was measured using self-report and teacher rating instruments. Similar to Harpin and Sandier (1979) the AML Behavior Rating Scale was used to obtain rating of maladaption. The scale includes 11 items from which four scores (aggression, moodiness, learning difficulties, and overall maladjustment) are derived.…”

“…Questions might also be raised about the possibility of unanticipated or unintended consequences of individual-systems fit. A large body of research conducted within a variety of settings has pointed to positive correlations among person-environment congruence and satisfaction, adjustment, and/or performance of the individual within that setting (French et al, 1974;Harpin & Sandler, 1979;Pervin, 1968). Yet the fit, or lack of fit, of an individual within a setting may have different implications for other aspects of life.…”
