Interaction of Polyphenols with Other Food Components as a Means for Their Neurological Health Benefits

Abstract: Over the last few years, there has been increasing interest in the possible beneficial effect of polyphenol consumption on neurodegenerative disorders. Because there is a clear impact of environmental factors on the onset and evolution of neurodegenerative conditions, food arises as a promising factor that might be influencing this group of pathologies. The mechanisms by which polyphenols can affect these processes can be through direct interaction with redox signaling or inflammatory pathways but can also be … Show more

“…A reaction of these free radicals with macromolecules has been reported to stimulate apoptosis that may cause various physiological, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders [10]. Various types of phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, and bioflavonoids having antioxidant characteristics have been used to treat many diseases [11].…”

“…41 Antioxidants are capable of stabilizing or deactivating free radicals before they attack cells, and can protect cellular components against oxidative damage, and therefore limit the risk of various degenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress. [42][43] Antioxidants manifest various pharmacological properties of interest, among which are antiinflammatory properties, antiallergic, antithrombotic, antimicrobial, antineoplastic, and anticancer activities, [44][45] which could justify some of the properties attributed to the species.…”

“…Apigenin and Chrysin are two structurally related polyphenols belonging to flavonoid family that are present in fruits, leaves and vegetables 6,7 . In the available literature, a lot of medical benefits associated with these are described [4][5][6]8 . The rationale for using these agents in most reports published to date has been more of a "pick and choose" strategy.…”

“…The rationale for using these agents in most reports published to date has been more of a "pick and choose" strategy. Most of the published work has only portrayed the beneficial effects associated with apigenin and/or chrysin in the area of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or neurodegeneration [4][5][6]8 . From a pharmacological perspective, it is very crucial to remember that these natural agents are not specific ligands and could regulate an array of targets, resulting in a landscape shift in cellular signaling and function.…”
