Interaction of adsorbed polymers with supported cationic bilayers

Abstract: The interaction forces between bilayers of the cationic surfactant di(tallow ethyl ester)dimethyl ammonium chloride (DEEDMAC) were measured using a Surface Forces Apparatus (SFA) with and without an adsorbing polymer, polyacrylamide (PAM). In the absence of PAM, the forces measured between the bilayer surfaces were purely repulsive on approach and separation and is charge regulated. Addition of PAM induced structural changes to the bilayer interfaces, and resulted in the formation of bilayer-like patches of DE… Show more

“…4b), which show that COL1A1 (width of ~ 1.5 nm), dispersed and intercalated within the mfp-3f films. Similarly, the more hydrophobic variant, mfp-3s, showed a cohesive force ( W c = 5.4 ± 0.2 mJ/m 2 ) for t c ~ 2 min, and COL1A1 increased the bridging interactions [16] between the two films ( W c = 7.2± 0.6 mJ/m 2 ) (Fig. S4).…”

“…Dopa-modified Pro-pep dimer showed cohesion energy similar to the unmodified dimer. The forces measured between unmodified mfp-1 Pro-pep dimer films on approach were purely repulsive due to steric and hydration forces [28] (Fig. 4 A ).…”

“…At C fp1 = 100 μg/mL, cohesion decreased significantly to W c = 0.18 ± 0.04 mJ/m 2 (Figure 2). The surfaces exhibited poor bridging cohesion 32 at C fp1 = 25 and 100 μg/mL compared with mfp-1 ( Mc ) bridging at C fp1 ~ 50 μg/mL (Figure 1). …”

“…32,33 Mfp-1 ( Mc ) films were made by adsorbing 50 μL of the protein from a C fp1 = 10–100 μg/mL in a buffer solution (0.1 M sodium acetate buffer, pH 5.5, 0.25 M KNO 3 , and 1 mM bis–tris) onto the mica surfaces for 30 min, then rinsing the excess protein with the same buffer. During the protein adsorption, the discs were kept in a saturated Petri dish to minimize evaporation of the water from the surfaces.…”
