Interaction of a polycrystalline silver powder with ozone

Abstract: The interaction of a polycrystalline silver powder with ozone (5 mol.% O 3 in O 2 ) was investigated over the temperature range 300-923 K. Silver powder samples were reacted with ozone for 30 min at specified temperatures in this range. All experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure. Following treatment, samples were cooled rapidly to room temperature under a nitrogen gas purge and then characterized by scanning electron microscopy, powder x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron s… Show more

“…This would strengthen the Ag-O bonding and increase the Ag-O stretching frequency of the O ␄ species. We have observed similar behaviour for the Ag-O stretching mode of O ␄ on silver surfaces modified by chemisorbed bromine and iodine atoms [57]. The parallel to the surface bending deformation at 350 cm −1 shifts to slightly lower wavenumber as the intensity ratio 870/810 increases (see below).…”

“…In any case, such an oxidation is very mild. On the contrary, after BT functionalization, the Ag MVV peak is strongly modified by the appearance of a component at a KE of about 350.5 eV (M 5 VV) and 356.0 eV (M 4 VV) corresponding to the presence of Ag + [25]. This evidence suggests that such substrate, once functionalized with the targeted analyte, should be quickly used in order to have reliable SERS measurements.…”

“…2(a) and 2(b)) do not show any appreciable variation in the intensity or in the energy (both binding, BE or kinetic, KE) for any of the spectral lines, in particular for the oxygen sensitive Ag M 4 NN Auger transition, [26][27][28][29] indicating that the Ag NPs do not undergo any oxidation. The small lineshape differences found in the AgTi5050 Auger spectrum (shoulder at 348.5 eV and intensity and width of the peak) stem from a Ti Auger line present in the 350-357 eV KE region, 29 becoming relevant with increasing Ti content.…”
