Interaction Coefficient between Al and Sn in Molten High Al Steel

Abstract: The interaction coefficient between Al and Sn in molten iron containing high Al was measured using a chemical equilibrium technique. A molten Fe-Al alloy was equilibrated with a molten Ag-Sn alloy in an Al 2 O 3 crucible at 1 823 K. The interaction coefficient of Sn and Al in Fe-Al alloys was measured to be ε Sn Al = − 3.18 while varying the concentration of Al in a range from 0.01-0.17 in mole fraction. The influence of Sn on the deoxidation equilibrium of Al and O was estimated using the above interaction co… Show more

“…Recently, the interaction coefficients of alloying elements with tramp elements in molten Fe were reported. [38][39][40][41][42] However, data on the interaction coefficients of transition elements with tramp elements in molten alloy steels have been very limited. In our previous work, the interaction coefficients of boron (B), cobalt (Co), and Ni with Cu 41) and those of Mo, B, Ni, titanium (Ti), and niobium (Nb) with Sn in molten Fe 42) were reported.…”

“…Conventionally, Al is a deoxidation agent in steelmaking, and the Al content is ≈0.01–0.06 wt% in Al‐killed steels. [ 1,2 ] Recently, many high‐Al steels, such as transformation‐induced plasticity (TRIP), twinning‐induced plasticity (TWIP), and Fe–Mn–Al–C low‐density steels, have attracted increasing attention. [ 3–6 ] The Al content in the aforementioned high‐Al steels is generally over 1 wt%; therefore, the Al in a high‐Al steel can fully react with the O in the steel, and may even react with the N in the steel, forming a large amount of Al 2 O 3 inclusions in the steelmaking process.…”
