Interaction between sodium and chloride transport in bovine tracheal epithelium.

Abstract: SUMMARY1. The active transport of Na and Cl across bovine tracheal epithelium was studied in vitro by measuring 22Na and 36CI fluxes under short-circuit conditions.2. Under basal conditions, both net Cl secretion and net Na absorption were observed; the sum of these two net fluxes accounted for 85 % of the measured short-circuit current. The rate of spontaneous C1 secretion exceeded that of Na absorption by a factor of 2.3. Indomethacin, an inhibitor of endogenous prostaglandin production, decreased Cl secreti… Show more

“…The similarities between amphibian epidermal, surface airway, and submucosal glandular epithelia with respect to highly regulated CFTR expression is intriguing and suggests that similar mechanisms of regulating ion conductances may exist between these model systems. Such a hypothesis for cell-type specific regulation of Na + and Cl -conductance in bovine tracheal epithelium has been previously suggested 97,98 and is highlighted in Figure 2c. If this hypothesis is true, gene targeting to correct Gene therapy of CF lung disease Q Jiang and JF Engelhardtchloride secretory defects may encompass different cell types than those necessary to achieve correction of Na + absorption defects.…”

“…Secondly we aimed at investigating the dietary and hormonal influences on the regulation of coprodeal CI transport. Thirdly, after having found profound alterations in C1 secretion, we aimed at tracing the epithelial and cellular site of C1 secretion, e.g., to tackle the question if distinct cells are involved in either Na-or Cl-transport (Langridge- Smith, 1985Smith, , 1986.…”
