Interaction between ostracods and anurans: a review and new records in Brazil

Abstract: Both ostracods and amphibians are able to colonize a wide variety of freshwater environments (Balian et al. 2008, Martens et al. 2008, Ottonelo and Romano 2011). However, unlike amphibians, ostracods also are widely distributed in marine environments (Coimbra and Bergue 2011). The first fossil records of ostracods are dated from the Ordovician Period and, in the Carboniferous Period, these crustaceans began to colonize freshwater environments (Coimbra and Bergue 2011). Ostracods are found in all types of aquat… Show more

“…Phoresy has been observed between ostracods of the genus Elpidium and several anuran species, including the egg-brooding tree frog Fritziana goeldii (Lopez et al 2005, Sabagh et al 2011, Sabagh and Rocha 2014, Moroti et al 2019. Fritziana goeldii was t e first an ran species for which adult ingestion of ostracods was reported (Guarabyra et al 2020).…”

“…In amphibians, phoresy is mainly reported for species related to phytotelmic environments, such as bromeliads, where the accumulation of water and debris provides a microhabitat for many species of invertebrates and vertebrates (Oliveira et al 1994, Kitching 2000, Lopez et al 2005. Whether using bromeliads exclusively for refuge and feeding (bromelicolous species) or to carry out their entire life cycle (bromeligenous species), amphibians are suitable hosts for the phoretic invertebrate fauna present in the phytotelmic community, such as microcrustaceans, annelids, and ciliates (Lopez et al 2002, Sabagh et al 2011, Moroti et al 2019.…”

“…Thus, future studies could also investigate whether more abundant species or those with more attractive (to midges) calls will have higher probability of Bd infection mediated by these dipterans. Complementary, there must be other amphibian ectoparasites (such as ticks: Muñoz‐Leal et al, 2017) and phoretic invertebrates (such as ostracods: Moroti et al, 2019; or others: Araújo et al, 2020) that could also be carrying Bd zoospores from host to host. Besides these, it is possible that, if confirmed, Bd is the first (or one of the first) fungus ever reported to be transmitted by blood‐feeding arthropods (Rosenberg & Beard, 2011).…”

“…No presente estudo realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica e verificou-se que, após a descrição original, Scinax crospedospilus foi sendo paulatinamente registrado em diversas localidades na Mata Atlântica dos estados do Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Minas Gerais (Araujo et al, 2010;Araujo et al, 2013;Assis & Feio, 2017;Bang et al, 2017;Bertoluci, 1998;Bertoluci & Rodrigues, 2002;Bevier et al, 2008;Brusquetti et al, 2014;Carvalho et al 2008;Cochran, 1955;Condez et al, 2009;Conte et al, 2016;Forlani et al, 2010;Garcia et al, 2012;Garey et al, 2014;Gruber et al, 2017;Heyer et al, 1990;Lacerda et al, 2014;Leite et al, 2019;Lourenço-de-Moraes et al, 2018;Lutz, 1973;Lyra et al, 2017;Magrini et al, 2011;Moroti et al, 2019aMoroti et al, , 2019bMoura et al, 2012;Neves et al, 2017a;Neves et al, 2017b;Pacheco et al, 2016;Pereira et al, 2016;Pires & Feio, 2017;Pugliese et al, 2004;Silva et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2016;Silva et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2018;Silveira et al, 2019;Souza et al, 2016;Verdade et al, 2009).
