Interaction Between microRNA and DNA Methylation in Atherosclerosis

Abstract: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease accompanied by complex pathological changes, such as endothelial dysfunction, foam cell formation, and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. Many approaches, including regulating AS-related gene expression in the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level, contribute to alleviating AS development. The DNA methylation is a crucial epigenetic modification in regulating cell function by silencing the relative gene expression. The microRNA (miRNA) is a… Show more

“…As a pivotal epigenetic modification, DNA methylation often regulates cell function via gene silence [ 11 ]. Given the high morbidity and mortality of atherosclerosis and its complications, many studies have revealed possible associations between methylation and atherosclerosis pathology [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…It is also a relatively stable marker during gene transcription [ 10 ]. Recently, aberrant DNA methylation has been increasingly reported to be related to various diseases, including atherosclerosis [ 11 ]. For instance, the ABCG1 methylation status has been evidenced to be negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, which might then contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis [ 12 ].…”

“…MiRNA, consisting of 20–40 nucleotides, regulates post-transcriptional gene expression. In many diseases, this process is accompanied by DNA methylation or histone modifications ( Tao et al, 2021 ). miRNA broadly participates in inflammation, oxidative reaction, cholesterol balance, and all of these processes are atherosclerosis risk factors.…”

“…Many factors affect DNA methylation status, including the environment, diet, and aging. Recent studies have shown that abnormal DNA methylation is closely related to the occurrence and development of many cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease (Kim et al, 2010;Navas-Acien et al, 2021), atherosclerosis (AS) (Tao et al, 2021), hypertension (Dupriest et al, 2020;Amenyah et al, 2021), HF (Kao et al, 2010;Haas et al, 2013;Madsen et al, 2020), and DCM (Liu ZZ. et al, 2014;Guo et al, 2021).…”
