Interaction between macrophages and ferroptosis

Abstract: Ferroptosis, a newly discovered iron-dependent cell death pathway, is characterized by lipid peroxidation and GSH depletion mediated by iron metabolism and is morphologically, biologically and genetically different from other programmed cell deaths. Besides, ferroptosis is usually found accompanied by inflammatory reactions. So far, it has been found participating in the development of many kinds of diseases. Macrophages are a group of immune cells that widely exist in our body for host defense and play an imp… Show more

“…Inhibitory factors existed in the microenvironment after SCI may affect endogenous stem cell differentiation [20], including astrocytes and microglia. Microglia are resident macrophages that normally remain static in the central nervous system [21]. After SCI, microglia and astrocytes are rapidly activated by various pathological factors.…”

“…Iron load promotes the polarization of M1 macrophages and induces the release of inflammatory factors such as IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α within M1 macrophages ( 60 ). The effect of ferroptosis on macrophage function is multifaceted, it can not only affect the polarization of macrophages, but also initiate the aggregation of macrophages ( 61 ).Ferroptosis is present in a variety of diseases, and the removal of ferroptosis cells is performed by macrophages. Damaged-associated molecular pattern molecules (DAMPs) can recruit and activate macrophages.…”

“…Free iron accelerates this modification process through the action of hydroxyl free radicals. Monocytes adhere to the vascular endothelium and are transferred to the subendothelium through chemotaxis to transform into macrophages (66). Macrophages serve a pivotal role in AS progression, recognizing and destroying endothelial cells.…”
