Interaction between Li, Ultrathin Adsorbed Ethylene Carbonate Films, and CoO(111) Thin Films: A Model Study of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation at CoO Anodes

Abstract: Aiming at a detailed understanding of the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the electrode–electrolyte interface, which plays a critical role in the performance of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), we studied the interaction between Li, ultrathin films of ethylene carbonate (EC, main electrolyte component in LIBs), and CoO(111) thin films grown on Ru(0001), where the latter serves as a model for a conversion electrode, under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ul… Show more

“…Finally, we recorded valence band (UPS) spectra of ultrathin Na films (Figure 1d) with thicknesses ≤1.3 Å, using He I radiation (21.21 eV) (Figure 1d). The spectrum of the pristine Ru(0001) substrate (black solid line) displays peaks at ∼0.3, 2.6, and 5.0 eV (Ru 4d band), in agreement with literature [40–42] . The work function Φ was determined from the cut‐off energy ( E cut‐off ) of 16.0 eV to 5.2±0.1 eV ( Φ Ru(0001) = hν − E cut‐off ).…”

“…The spectrum of the pristine Ru(0001) substrate (black solid line) displays peaks at ~0.3, 2.6, and 5.0 eV (Ru 4d band), in agreement with literature. [40][41][42] The work function Φ was determined from the cut-off energy (E cutoff ) of 16.0 eV to 5.2 0.1 eV (Φ Ru(0001) = hνÀ E cut-off ). As expected, during stepwise vapor deposition of sub-monolayer amounts of Na the work function Φ gradually decreases (grey solid lines).…”
