Interaction between an Adatom and a Substitutional Impurity Atom a t a Metal Surface BY KIN-ICHI MASUDARecently, there has been considerable interest in the study of the interaction between adsorbed atoms on solid surfaces. The oscillatory electronic interaction between adsorbed atoms has been discussed by Grimley /l/, Grimley and Walker /2/, Einstein and Schrieffer /3/, and Lau and Kohn /4/. Tsong /5/ reported experimental evidence for the oscillatory interaction between Re atoms adsorbed on VJ surface. On the other hand, several authors have studied the dipole-dipole interaction /6/ and the phonon-mediated elastic interaction /7, 8 / due to adatom pair on the metal surface (non-oscillatory interaction which varies as R-3 where R is the distance between the adatoms) .Most of the previous calculations, however, have been concerned with the pair interactions between the surface atoms of the s a m e kind.
