Inter-site and interpersonal diversity of salivary and tongue microbiomes, and the effect of oral care tablets

Abstract: Background: Oral microbiota has been linked to both health and disease. Specifically, tongue-coating microbiota has been implicated in aspiration pneumonia and halitosis. Approaches altering one's oral microbiota have the potential to improve oral health and prevent diseases. Methods: Here, we designed a study that allows simultaneous monitoring of the salivary and tongue microbiomes during an intervention on the oral microbiota. We applied this study design to evaluate the effect of single-day use of oral car… Show more

“… 29–32 Thus, we focused on the bacterial genera typically found in the oral microbiome. 33 Twenty-nine oral-related bacteria were detected in cancer patients’ fecal samples and relative abundance of oral-related bacteria were significantly enriched in PPI group and tended to increase in ATB+PPI group ( Figure 6(a )). Overall compositions of gut microbiota at each taxonomy level were showed in the Supplementary Figure S6 .…”

“…Previous studies have reported that OTUs can cause misassignment of query sequences to taxa (Tikhonov et al, 2015) and possibly overestimate the bacterial diversity and microbial abundance in the infection (Nearing et al, 2018;Prodan et al, 2020). In the ASVs method, sequences are conditional to a quality control analysis, which removes low-quality samples, and the potential errors are denoised by computational methods (Maruyama et al, 2020). Additionally, the sequence errors in the ASVs method are controlled up to one nucleotide difference, having higher sensitivity to biological variations (Callahan et al, 2017).…”

“…Actually, in this clinical trial, we only evaluated the short‐term effect of the oral care tablet by the collection of tongue coating samples an hour after taking two tablets. Meanwhile, it was reported that a 1‐day usage of oral care tablets did not alter the tongue microbiomes of healthy subjects, who took three oral care tablets in a day and whose tongue coating sample was collected after waking up (Maruyama et al, 2020). Moreover, the analysis of the Human Microbiome Project data sets clarified that the oral habitat has the most stable microbiota in the human body (Zhou et al, 2013).…”
