Cloud Data Centers have become the backbone infrastructure to provide services. With the emerging edge computing paradigm, computation and networking capabilities have been pushed from clouds to the edge to provide computation, intelligence, networking management with low end-to-end latency. Service migration across different computing nodes in edge and cloud computing becomes essential to guarantee the quality of service in the dynamic environment. Many studies have been conducted on the dynamic resource management involving migrating Virtual Machines to achieve various objectives, such as load balancing, consolidation, performance, energy-saving, and disaster recovery. Some have investigated to improve and predict the performance of single live migration of VM and container. Recently, several studies service migration in the edge-centric computing paradigms. However, there is a lack of surveys to focus on the live migration management in edge and cloud computing environments. We examine the characteristics of each field and conduct a migration management-centric taxonomy and survey. We also identify the gap and research opportunities to guarantee the performance of resource management with live migrations.

The trending evolution towards the Internet of things and the general increase in broadband are constantly creating large volumes of data that need to be processed to extract further knowledge. Recently, the cloud computing model has seen the evolution from the initial scenario of a public cloud offering its resources to customers through virtualization and Internet, toward the concept of hybrid cloud, where the classic scenario is enriched with a private (company owned) cloud e.g., for the management of sensible data. In this work, we propose a software layer for the deployment and dynamic scaling of virtual clusters on a hybrid cloud. This system can be used for cloud bursting in the context of big data applications. Our work shows that although the execution is significantly influenced by the intercloud bandwidth, a dynamic off-premise provisioning mechanism could allow the user to significantly increase the application performance.

A key feature in virtualization technology is the Live Migration, which allows a Virtual Machine (VM) to be moved from a physical host to another without execution interruption. This feature enables the implementation of more sophisticated policies inside a cloud environment, such as energy and computational resources optimization, and improvement of quality-of-service. However live migration can impose severe performance degradation for the VM application and cause multiple impacts in service provider infrastructure, such as network congestion and colocated VM performance degradation. Different of several studies we consider the VM workload an important factor and we argue that carefully choosing a proper moment to migrate a VM can reduce the live migration penalties. This paper introduces a method to identify the workload cycles of a VM and based on that information it can postpone a Live Migration. In our experiments, using relevant benchmarks the proposed method was able to reduce up to 43% of network data transfer and reduce up to 74% of live migration time when compared to traditional consolidation strategies that perform live migration without considering the VM workload.
