Inter- and Intramolecular Energy Transfer in Gammaradiolysis of n-Alkylbenzenes

Abstract: Hydrogen production in y-irradiated ii-alkylbenzenes (toluene to heptadecylbenzene), in isomeric η -alkylbenzenes and Ji-alkylbenzenes-d 5 was investigated. Radicals formed at 77 °K were identified by EPR-spectroscopy and their G-values measured. A mechanism for the formation of hydrogen, based on ion-molecule reactions and hot atom reactions, is proposed. The low G(H 2 ) und G(R) values of the various ra-alkylbenzenes indicate that the phenyl group protects the alkyl group, with respect to hydrogen and radica… Show more

“…16,17 Another similarity to the azobenzene spectrum is the absence of evidence for the cyclohexadienyl radical (a 1:2:1 triplet with AH ~50 G) which is also frequently observed in irradiated alkylbenzenes. 18,19 The presence of small amounts of radicals of the R-OCH2• type, or radicals associated with the azoxy group can neither be confirmed nor denied on the basis of the spectrum as the expected hyperfine splittings would be partly overlapped by the broad singlet signal. However a significant fraction of such radicals would be expected to contribute more observable structure than is seen.…”

“…Similar results have been observed in n-alkylbenzenes by Zeman and Heusinger in a study of intramolecular energy transfer. 16 They reported that lower members of the homologous series showed only radicals associated with the aromatic ring, while higher members, starting at about seven alkyl carbons, showed increasingly great alkyl radical concentrations. Their determination of the yield of alkyl H2 vs. number of alkyl carbons showed a smooth rise from G » 0.33 for -1 to ~0.42 for = 7 and a sharp rise to ~0.62 at = 9, indicating an abrupt breakdown in intramolecular protection and an expected sharp increase in alkyl radical production.…”

“…Untersuchungen [1][2][3][4][5] an verschiedenen Phenylalkanen haben ergeben, daß bei Einwirkung ionisierender Strahlung Energieübertragung nicht nur intermolekular, sondern auch intramolekular stattfindet. Die untersuchten Substanzen besaßen Alkylgruppen mit maximal 16 C-C-Bindungen.…”
