PurposeEntrepreneurship is one of the pillars of economic development and helps to green the economy. This study investigates the factors that affect green entrepreneurship (GE) in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia.Design/methodology/approachUsing quantitative modes, this study's findings are based on 334 valid cases from Saudi Arabian SME employees.FindingsUsing path analysis, this study’s findings reveal that green entrepreneurial skills (GES), green opportunities (GOs), entrepreneurial motivation (EM), green incentives (GIs), availability of capital (AoC) and green entrepreneurial self-efficacy (GESE) have positive and significant effects on GE. Moreover, GESE mediates GE's relationships with GES, GOs, EM, GIs and AoC.Practical implicationsThis study's findings support the development of green business practices in terms of green business planning, training and skills. The research provides opportunities for green businesses. Policymakers and SME authorities would benefit from this study's findings in producing green goods and services.Originality/valueThis study empirically confirms the role of various factors such as GESE and GE among Saudi Arabian SMEs.

Green entrepreneurship has become a growing area of interest among researchers and practitioners as it has the potential to address the sustainability challenges faced by the global economy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate six antecedents (self-efficacy, attitude, green consumption commitment, country support, university support, and subjective norms) that can predict the intention to engage in green entrepreneurship among higher education students. A total of 690 higher education students were surveyed, and the results were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results showed that the internal antecedents of green entrepreneurship intention (self-efficacy, attitude, and green consumption commitment) have a higher significant predictive power than the external antecedents of green entrepreneurship intention (country support, university support, and subjective norms) among higher education students. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the factors that influence green entrepreneurship intention (GEI) and can be used to inform policy and educational initiatives aimed at promoting green entrepreneurship. The findings of this research could also draw attention from the government and universities who are interested in understanding the factors that influence students’ inclination towards green entrepreneurship. This could lead to the creation of relevant course materials, programs, and funding to promote sustainable initiatives.

Aim/objective Given an escalated interest in fostering environmental protection, scholars have associated green entrepreneurial behavior as a stimulating factor and the cornerstone of green entrepreneurial performance. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism that nurtures university students’ green entrepreneurial behavior is yet to be explored in the extant literature. Our study proposes the antecedent effects of institutional support and green knowledge transfer to enhance university students’ green entrepreneurial behavior. Moreover, we also expand the boundary conditions of these relationships and suggest the mediating effect of university students’ absorptive capacity and the moderating effect of environmental responsibility. Methodology The study samples university graduates in Chinese universities (N = 434) by adopting a lagged research design spanning over three months. We assessed the proposed model through the multivariate analytical technique. Findings The findings indicate that institutional support and green knowledge transfer significantly elevate university students’ green entrepreneurial behavior. Further, these relationships are intervened considerably through absorptive capacity’s mediating effect and environmental responsibility’s moderating effect. Implications By investigating the crucial roles of institutional support and green knowledge transfer in culminating university students’ green entrepreneurial behavior, our study extends the boundary conditions of these relationships and investigates the hitherto unexplored moderated mediation model.
