Intensity modulated silver coated glass optical fiber refractive index sensor

Abstract: Miniature optical fiber sensors with thin films as sensitive elements could open new fields for optical fiber sensor applications. Thin films work as sensitive elements and a transducer to get response and feedback from environments, in which optical fibers act as a signal carrier. A novel Ag coated intensity modulated optical fiber sensor based on refractive index changes using IR and UV-Vis (UV-visible) light sources is proposed. The sensor with an IR light source has higher sensitivity compared to a UV-Vis … Show more

“…[ 30 ] However, oxygen vacancies play an important role in the enhancement of conductivity of the sensing surface and it is directly proportional to each other. [ 31 ] The Fermi energy band level lies in between the lower (valence) band and upper band and its distance is closer to the upper band which is shown in the electronic band diagram ( Figure ). Indeed, during the interaction of sensing probes with an amine group, the Fermi level shifting takes place (Figure 5) with the transformation of lone pair of electrons (:→) from the N 2 atom to the sensing surface.…”

“…The basic operating principle of the fiber optic sensor is that the light signal travelling through an optical fiber changes when it is subjected to chemical or physical stimulus [13]. Such mechanism allows the fiber optic sensor to find applications in detecting properties such as temperature [14], [15], liquid level [16], [17], refractive index [18]- [20], uric acid concentration [21], [22] and ammonia concentration [2], [6]- [11]. For ammonia detection in water, many methods have engineered the fiber such that a part of the cladding of the fiber sensor is removed through chemical etching, tapering or a combination of etching and tapering.…”

“…Optical fiber sensors are well known for their advantages such as high immunity to electromagnetic interferences, high durability when exposed to harsh environment and high sensitivities. For these reasons, they have found many applications that involve the monitoring of refractive index [1], humidity [2], vibration [3], temperature [4] and other various parameters.…”
