Intensity Dependence of Auditory Evoked N1/P2 Component and Personality

Abstract: The slope of the amplitude/stimulus intensity function (ASF) of sensory evoked potentials was found to be related to ‘action-oriented’ personality traits like ‘sensation seeking’, ‘extraversion’, and ‘impulsivity’. We studied the ASF slope of the auditory evoked N1/P2 component as well as short-term ASF slope changes and their relationship to a German personality inventory (Freiburger Persönlichkeits-Inventar) in 33 healthy subjects. The ASF slope correlated negatively with ‘life contentment’ and positively wi… Show more

“…This change is also referred to as augmenting disposition or 'high-level intensity dependence'. Since Zuckerman's [1] review, this finding has been replicated several times [2,3]. In a recent study, we could also confirm the correlation between SS and augmenting [4].…”

“…However, because the use of regression slopes for the amplitude stimulus intensity function (ASF) has been criticized for their low coefficients of determination in individual data [20], a nonlinear computation was also performed [2]. The medians of all possible slopes between each two amplitudes for the six stimulus intensities (median slopes) were calculated.…”

“…* Supporting the interpretation of these ERP response profiles, studies have found that the temperament traits of extraversion [4] and novelty- [5] and sensation- [6][7][8] seeking are associated with increased intensity dependence.…”

“…For a retest of IDAP within the same test session, i.e. a second recording after about 20 min, Hegerl et al (16) reported a pronounced drop in ASF slopes for a subgroup of their volunteers. This is in line with our results showing a significant decrease of mean ASF slopes in the second measurement of the I-h retest when a 100 Hz low-pass filter was used and a nonsignificant but strong tendency in the same direction using a 30 Hz filter.…”
