Intensification of Droplet Dispersion by Using Multilayer Wire Mesh and Its Application in a Rotating Packed Bed

Abstract: Liquid dispersion by impacting on wire mesh benefits many mass transfer processes. However, most of studies focused on the dispersion behaviors of liquid impacting on a one-layer wire mesh. In this work, the intensification of droplet dispersion by impacting on multilayer wire mesh was investigated as well as considering the influence of surface wettability. The dispersion characteristics (cone angle of dispersion θcone and average diameter of daughter droplets d avg) were systematically analyzed. θcone enlarg… Show more

“…Using a porous material to disperse a liquid can generate more daughter droplets without additional energy input, bringing the advantage of the increased liquid surface area. , Porous stainless steel wire meshes have been widely used in filtration, separation, spray, and other chemical processes . Li et al studied the filtration performance of a sintered stainless steel wire mesh filter with a nominal filtration degree of 0.5 μm, which is used to purify CO 2 solid particles from liquid nitrogen.…”

“…The Weber number is a dimensionless number which describes the ratio between a kinetic energy and a surface energy of the drop. The impact of relatively large droplets on a fine mesh was described for other differing input parameters, such as several layers of wire meshes in Su et al [11] or hydrophobic mesh in Zhang et al [12]. A hydrophobic mesh shows a dispersion angle under the mesh that is significantly greater than that of a hydrophilic mesh.…”

“…In the RPB, the liquid was injected to the packing, then sheared into tiny liquid elements of droplets, films, and so forth. , In our previous work, the hydrophobicity of the wire mesh has been proven to generate a better initial liquid distribution at the inner packing zone of a RPB, which could enhance the mass transfer and micromixing process . Besides optimizing the macrostructure and types of packing, recent advancements in the surface modification at micro-scale of the wire mesh packing for liquid dispersion enhancement provide a promising direction for further improvement of the reactor performance. …”

“…Lu et al installed a single-layer hydrophobic SSM in the inner cavity zone of the RPB to obtain a better initial liquid dispersion for the rotor. Multilayer hydrophobic SSMs were also applied in the RPB for mass transfer intensification . Besides the RPB, the solid surface modification was also applied in other chemical equipments.…”
