1. Climate change is testing the resilience of forests worldwide pushing physiological tolerance to climatic extremes. Plant functional traits have been shown to be adapted to climate and have evolved patterns of trait correlations (similar patterns of distribution) and coordinations (mechanistic trade-off). We predicted that traits would differentiate between populations associated with climatic gradients, suggestive of adaptive variation, and correlated traits would adapt to future climate scenarios in similar ways. 2. We measured genetically determined trait variation and described patterns of correlation for seven traits: photochemical reflectance index (PRI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf size (LS), specific leaf area (SLA), δ 13 C (integrated water-use efficiency, WUE), nitrogen concentration (N CONC ), and wood density (WD). All measures were conducted in an experimental plantation on 960 trees sourced from 12 populations of a key forest canopy species in southwestern Australia.3. Significant differences were found between populations for all traits. Narrowsense heritability was significant for five traits (0.15-0.21), indicating that natural selection can drive differentiation; however, SLA (0.08) and PRI (0.11) were not significantly heritable. Generalized additive models predicted trait values across the landscape for current and future climatic conditions (>90% variance). The percent change differed markedly among traits between current and future predictions (differing as little as 1.5% (δ 13 C) or as much as 30% (PRI)). Some trait correlations were predicted to break down in the future (SLA:N CONC , δ 13 C:PRI, and N CONC :WD). 4. Synthesis: Our results suggest that traits have contrasting genotypic patterns and will be subjected to different climate selection pressures, which may lower the working optimum for functional traits. This experiment was carried out at the Technical Center of Potato (C.T.P) situated in the low valley of Medjerda river at Tunisia, during two growing seasons (2006-2007) and (2008-2009). It aims at evaluating the effect of intercropping potato (Solanum tuberosum cv. Spunta) and sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L. cv. Bikra 21) grown under 1:1 intercropping row arrangement and sole cropping on water consumption and water use efficiency of one potato variety and one sulla variety. In addition, land equivalent ratio (LER) was determined to assess the efficiency of the intercropping system. Intercropping had no significant effect on the above parameters and tuber dry biomass production of potato and sulla. However, it increased the total dry biomass of the intercropping system. This increase occurred during the two cultivating seasons of 2007 and 2009 respectively from 12.5 to 14.8% compared to the potato in sole cropping. Intercropping has led to a similar reduction of water consumption (WC) of both crops. This reduction was 36 and 28% for 2007 and 2009 seasons respectively and for both crops. However, intercropping has led to an increase in the overall (WC) of the mixed system by 9.1 and 13.8% in 2007 and 2009 respectively. Water Use Efficiency (WUE) has been improved from 35.4 to 45.6% for potato in sole intercropping and from 25 to 37.5% for sulla intercropped. The values of total LER were higher than one, which indicates the superiority of intercropping system over the sole cropping system.

Silage maize (Zea mays L.) is the dominating energy crop for biogas production due to its high biomass yield potential, but alternatives are currently being discussed to avoid environmental problems arising from maize grown continuously. This study evaluates the productivity and resource use efficiency of different bioenergy crops and cropping systems using experimental and simulation modelling derived data. The field experiment consisted of two years, two sites differing in soil texture and soil water availability, different cropping systems and increasing nitrogen (N) supply. Continuous (two years) perennial ryegrass and two crop rotations including winter cover crops (double cropping system) and combining C4 and C3 crops were compared with continuous maize (maize-maize). The productivity of the crops and cropping systems in terms of dry matter (DM) yield was analyzed with respect to the fraction of light interception and light use efficiency (LUE). In addition, water use and water use efficiency (WUE), N uptake, and N use efficiency (NUE) were quantified. DM yield of the double cropping system was similar to that of continuous maize, due to a prolonged leaf area duration, compensating for the intrinsic lower LUE of C3 crops. Perennial ryegrass was less productive than the other crops/cropping systems. Nitrogen uptake and consequently N demand of perennial ryegrass and the C3 crops of the crop rotations were higher than for maize-maize. Groundwater recharge was mainly site-dependent, but was at both sites higher for maize than for the crop rotations or the perennial ryegrass system. Our results indicate that, in terms of biomass productivity, optimized rotations are feasible alternatives to maize-maize, but trade-offs exist in terms of water and N use efficiency.
