Intensification and intrahousehold decisions: Fertilizer adoption in Burkina Faso

Abstract: HighlightsIntrahousehold bargaining affects the adoption of fertilizer on farms in West Africa.Overall fertilizer use rates are low for cereals but less so for maize in Burkina Faso.Family members share agricultural inputs, including fertilizer.Bargaining does not achieve efficient fertilizer allocations.Inclusive policy should consider who within the household has access to inputs.

“…Indeed, Ali et al [50] found that the farm size and FI are negatively correlated in Ghana. Meanwhile, Haider et al [21] found a positive correlation between farm size and fertilizer application rate in Burkina Faso. The RFS refers to the rice production system (rice farming in low or dry land).…”

“…Following Houssou et al [20], we can define agricultural intensification as the action that makes agricultural systems more productive. Furthermore, because fertilizer is fundamental to enhancing productivity and it is the most widely adopted input in general and specifically in Côte d'Ivoire [21,22], in this study, we focus mainly on fertilizer among many other inputs. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that empirically investigates the link between access to credit and fertilizer intensification in rice farming in Côte d'Ivoire.…”

“…Data used to estimate the elasticities is taken from the Enquête Permanente Agricole (EPA), the "Continuous Farm Household Survey" of Burkina Faso. These data are collected by the Direction Générale des Études et des Statistiques Sectorielles (DGESS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and was used by Haider et al (2017) in their study on fertilizer adoption in Burkina Faso. The EPA is used to estimate farm input use, production, area, and yield of crops; it also provides information about livestock holdings and expenditures of rural households.…”

“…Such practice has been reported as an effective method to restore soil fertility and increase productivity [28,29]. An increase of crop farmland using fertilizer was reported from 7% in 1993 to 30% in 2006 [30] in Burkina Faso but the average fertilizer rate was reported low,11 or 12 kg/ha per hectare [31,32]. The high proportion of farmers using fertilizer in the Central-Western region could be attributed to several factors such as input subsidy, the agricultural potential of the area, and access to agricultural extension services.…”
